CASTEL SCHWEINSBURG - This
castle looks back on a long history. It was first mentioned in 973 as a
defensive post. In the 12th century a massive castle surrounded by a moat
was built on this spot. In 1413 the castle and the territory went to the
margraves of Meissen, member of the Wettin Dynasty, the oldest and one of the
most powerful dynasties in Germany. The name Schweinsburg stems from the many
wild boar that roamed the forests around the castle. Over the centuries the
castle changed owners several times as it was mostly used for private
purposes. From 1900 to 1908 it housed a pottery factory in one of the
wings. However, growing dept forced the present owner to sell the castle to a
wealthy yarn merchant from the nearby city of Zwickau who lived there until 1945
